Most online resources focus on the Iranian Pistachio properties of a food, while it can have dangerous disadvantages as well as benefits for us. Fresh pistachios are no exception.
Alireza Arzani Mamghani, president of the Mashhad Dried Fruit Union, told Nasim; The method of selling and consuming fresh pistachios in our country is very wrong and I dare say that its consumption is carcinogenic. He urges people not to consume fresh pistachios at all or to minimize their consumption. They go on to say that the skin of a pistachio picked from a tree must be removed within 24 hours of being picked, otherwise it will be a source of invisible carcinogenic fungi. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes up to a week for fresh pistachios to reach the leek fields from the garden! He states that, at least if someone prepares fresh pistachios, peel them fresh as soon as they are bought at home, wash the pistachios under water and then dry them on a napkin and then eat them.
According to him, it is better to be careful in consuming fresh pistachios so as not to lead to irreparable problems for us.
Risk of aflatoxin in pistachios
Aflatoxin is another side effect of using nuts. This substance is very dangerous for health and in developed countries its amount in food should not be too much. Aflatoxin is caused by molds such as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. This contamination can be caused by soil, inadequate storage and the spread of pests. Eating pistachios contaminated with mold and aflatoxins is dangerous. Aflatoxin contamination is a serious risk, especially in hot and humid environments.
